City of Henderson Materials Testing Lab Earns National Accreditation
The City of Henderson Public Works, Parks and Recreation Department has earned national accreditation by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) for the testing of construction materials at its onsite laboratory, located at the Inspection Services and Traffic Maintenance Facility at 2101 Moser Dr. Henderson is the only city in Nevada to hold this accreditation.
The AASHTO Accreditation Program recognizes the competency of testing laboratories to perform specific tests on construction materials. Through accreditation, laboratories prove their commitment to quality, demonstrate conformance with national and international standards, and influence and improve standards.
The accreditation process includes onsite third-party assessments during which each test method is demonstrated by the lab’s technical staff, and testing apparatus is also evaluated. The process includes a review of the lab’s quality management system, records of each technician’s training and competency evaluations, and equipment calibration and test records. Once accredited, reviews are conducted annually.
“The greatest benefit of accreditation is the confidence the public can have in knowing the materials tested for the public infrastructure constructed each year meet applicable standards,” said Ryland Ogle, materials testing laboratory manager, City of Henderson. “Accreditation can also present a cost savings to the city by reducing the amount of testing performed by third parties on federally funded projects requiring testing by an accredited lab.”
The accreditation covers the city’s quality management system and testing of asphalt mixture, soil, and aggregate. Ogle said the city intends to seek accreditation for concrete testing next year.
