Henderson Homeowners Night Provides Building Permit Answers for Do-It-Yourself Projects, Extended Office Hours for Customers
Henderson, Nev. – While do-it-yourself projects around the house may require research, careful planning and some handyman skills, homeowners often don’t realize many of these projects also require a building permit. The City of Henderson Development Services Center will be offering customers extended business hours on Wednesday, May 17 to answer questions and help with the permitting process.
What: City of Henderson Homeowners Night
When: Wednesday, May 17, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Henderson City Hall, 240 S. Water St.
In addition, residents will be able to take advantage of the city’s month-long amnesty program that allows homeowners to self-disclose non-permitted or non-code compliant work in their homes without penalties for required plan review and permit fees. The amnesty programs runs through May, which is national Building Safety Month.
“This program gives homeowners the opportunity to learn about the process and what repairs and improvements need permitting,” said Stephanie Garcia-Vause, Community Development and Services director. “The goal is not to fine or penalize homeowners, but to ensure that homes are repaired safely and improvements are made correctly and that all work meets city code.”
At the event, residents can learn how to obtain a permit for work previously performed on their homes, get information on the type of work requiring a permit and apply for permits for new work. Obtaining a building permit is the first step toward protecting the outcome and investment value of a construction project and guarding against a lawsuit or injury.
Building permits are beneficial to the homeowner and the community. By working with an expert code official, homeowners benefit from their knowledge of building codes to ensure the construction project is built right, will be safe and will last.
City staff members will answer questions related to building permits, neighborhood issues and zoning violations, including:
• Permit applications
• Plan requirements
• Permit fees
• Water heater permits
• Requests for inspections
• Property maintenance
Each home is an investment. If the construction project does not comply with the codes adopted by the community, the value of the investment could be reduced. Property insurers may not cover work performed without permits and passing inspections or selling a home that has had modifications without a permit may be difficult.
