Kids Count Education Ranking Addressed By Nevada’s Funding Priorities
Carson City, NV – June 13, 2017
Nevada’s Education ranking remained 49th in the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s release of its 2017 Kids Count Data Book today.
“While we showed improvement in every education category, our results are woefully inadequate and our children deserve better,” said Steve Canavero, Ph.D., Superintendent of Public Instruction. “Governor Brian Sandoval has long prioritized addressing our education deficiencies and our legislature just added $152 million to programs that were funded in 2015.”
The percentage of Nevada high school students who did not graduate on time in 2015-2015 decreased by 24 percent compared to 2010-2011. However, 66 percent of 3-and-4-year-olds are not attending school and 74 percent of eighth graders are not proficient in math.
The Nevada Legislature just added $72 million to fund weights for students in poverty and English learners, $17 million for Ready by Grade Three and $3.5 million for the Preschool Development grant match that aims to double the number of the state’s more vulnerable students being served and provided access to full-day, quality programs and services.
