Work Set to Begin on O’Callaghan Park Enhancements

One of the City of Henderson’s most mature parks will soon receive some much-anticipated enhancements. Work at O’Callaghan Park, located at 601 Skyline Rd., will begin within a week and is expected to last for about 90 days.
The project includes construction of a new dog park, replacement of one drinking fountain, and the installation of new light poles and fixtures at the dog park, basketball court and picnic shelters. During construction, residents can expect to see fencing adjacent to the park’s walkway, but the majority of the park will remain open to visitors.
“During public meetings and through an online input process, neighbors had an opportunity to let us know what proposed amenities were most important to them. A dog park was at the top of their wish list,” said Doug Guild, parks superintendent. “The new dog park will include separate areas for large and small dogs as well as an entry gate for leashing and unleashing. I think these enhancements will make O’Callaghan Park more popular than ever.”
Opened in 1974 as the city’s fourth park, the 20-acre O’Callaghan Park features tennis courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, picnic amenities, a playground, and a lighted ball field. A walking course that winds its way around the perimeter of the park is a favorite among neighbors.
Funding of $400,000 for the project has been received through Residential Construction Tax, which is paid by developers to help fund parks and infrastructure.
