Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen Statement of Opposition to Proposed Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Dump

Henderson, Nev. – Mayor Andy Hafen of Henderson, Nevada’s second largest city, issued the following statement of strong opposition to renewed efforts to restart spending on the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump located less than two hours from Las Vegas:
“Yucca Mountain threatens the safety of families in Henderson and the economy of our state. I join Governor Sandoval, our state’s bipartisan Congressional delegation and Henderson families in opposing the Trump administration’s plans to turn Nevada into a nuclear waste dump. Unleashing thousands of shipments of high-level radioactive waste on our roads and rails will place families at risk and one accident or terrorist attack involving these toxic materials could devastate our tourism-based economy. Nevadans have been fighting Yucca Mountain for three decades because it’s not safe and we’re not going to stop making our voices heard or surrender to those who are demanding we allow our state to become the nation’s nuclear dumping ground,” said Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen.
